Why Use an Ozone Spa Sanitizer?

Most hot tubs are built with a spa ozonator for a good reason. Quite simply, ozonators are the most cost-effective natural method to maintain the fresh, clear hot tub water you want.

There are many benefits to a spa ozonator:

• Natural ozone is a form of oxygen and is the most powerful spa sanitizer available.

• Automatic sanitizers makes maintaining “feel good” hot tub water simple.

• Ozone kills up to 99.99% of dangerous microbial agents like bacteria and viruses on contact.

• Ozone reduces the need for harsh chemicals (such as chlorine and bromine) by 60 – 90%.

• Ozone oxidizes the widest range of organic materials, including all human fluids, of any spa sanitizer.

• Ozone is 200x more powerful than chlorine alone.

• Ozone does not give off the chemical odor normally found in pools/spas. In fact, it breaks down the by-products that cause these odors.

• Ozone does not cause skin or eye irritation, and does not degrade swimwear.

• An ozonated spa requires fewer water drainings than a spa with other sanitizing chemicals.

• The only by-product of ozone is ordinary oxygen – and oxygen actually contributes to the sparkling clarity of hot tub water.

Isn’t Ozone Dangerous?

The ozone from DEL's Corona Discharge (CD) ozonators is fully dissolved in the hot tub water through an injector, which ensures there are no adverse effects on humans. It does, however, kill bacteria, viruses, and other organic material living in the water. Ozone spa sanitizers protect humans from the rashes and diseases that can result from inadequately treated water. They deliver the pure, clear water that is essential for a satisfying hot tub experience.

What About Alternative Sanitizers?

Ozone is not the only spa sanitizer around. Even with a working spa ozonator, you will use a small amount of supplementary chemicals, such as a sodium hypochloride, after each hot tub use. There are other agents that claim to be good primary spa sanitizers. Bromine is one of the most familiar of these, but its noxious side effects (like smell, feel and dangerous chloramines and bromamines) are making it less desirable. Other non-chlorine alternatives are available, but none offers the naturally purifying power of ozone without side effects or chemical residues.

Explanation of Sanitizer Benefits

Sanitizing power: Ozone is 200 times more powerful than chlorine as a primary sanitizer.

Sanitizing range: Ozone is effective against the widest range of hot tub water contaminants – see the remainder of the table. The CD ozonator technology is capable of injecting more dissolved ozone into the water than the UV alternative and leaves a higher residual level of ozone that can oxidize a wider range of organics (though the residual is small since ozone oxidizes on contact and is quickly reduced to ordinary oxygen).

Algaecide: The one place chlorine may be most effective. This is more important for a pool than a spa because of the much greater volume of water. Algae can bloom any place in the volume of water, and if it does not come in direct contact with a sanitizer that is effective against it, it grows. Ozone kills algae on contact, but ozone is injected in the circulation system and oxidizes so fast that any uncirculated water may contain algae. Chlorine shines here because in solution in the body of water it is present everywhere so it prevents the algae blooms.

Bactericide: All sanitizers should be effective against bacteria and viruses. However, ozone kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses on contact with no harmful by-products.

Organics oxidation: Ozone oxidizes a very wide range of organic materials, including human bodily fluids, oils, cosmetics and materials introduced through the air. Some other sanitizers, like Biguanides, are not effective against these contaminants.

Eliminates chloramines: One possible by-product of chlorine is chloramines. These compounds account for the red eye irritation in swimming pools, and can sometimes occur in hot tubs. The only spa sanitizer that can neutralize these compounds is ozone.

Help water clarity: The only by-product of ozone is oxygen. Adding oxygen to water adds clarity and sparkle and freshness.

Micro-flocculant: Ozone acts to encourage the grouping of minute pieces of organic material in hot tub water which allows the filter to trap them and eliminate them.

Carcinogen: Chloramines, a by-product of chlorine, is proven to be a carcinogenic material.

Environmental impact: The only by-product of ozone is oxygen. Chemicals leave residues that affect water quality or must be disposed of in the environment.
