Commercial aquatics operators and public health officials are concerned about the rising incidence of illnesses associated with recreational swimming. Inadequate disinfection using traditional chemical sanitation methods have led to outbreaks of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and neurological disorders caused by contamination with microorganisms not killed by chlorine (like Cryptosporidium parvum, also known as crypto) or by the chemical byproducts of chemical sanitation (chloramines).
